Having a big impact in your community

“I don’t know what I would have done without him in the last five years.”

And that’s the volunteer big brother saying that. Imagine the impact of being a big brother or big sister to a child who comes from a single parent family and is in need of positive guidance, reassurance and a friend.

Without volunteers this program wouldn’t work

We are always in need of more great people like you and your friends to become mentors to our community’s youth. We have several different programs available designed to suit everyone’s lifestyle and schedule. If you know someone that you believe would make a good Big Brother or Big Sister, tell them about what you do.
If you would like someone to come speak at your place of employment, church group, or any other group event, give us a call at 372-0160.

Feel free to call directly at (517) 372-0160 or e-mail at info@bigimpactmidmi.com

Making A Big Impact: Becoming a Friend

Simply put, a big brother or sister becomes a friend, a confidant and mentor. The “match” relationship provides the child (“Little”) with an increased sense of belonging, often leading to enhanced communication skills and improved performance at school, home and in the community. The “Bigs” and “Littles” have fun together, and ultimately, the adult volunteer benefits by seeing the impact of his/her guidance and friendship on the child…truly making a difference in the life of the child.
Each volunteer commits to spending time with their “Little,” on a weekly or monthly basis, depending on the program and the schedules of the “match.” They share experiences, accomplishments, concerns, and laughter through simple activities such as walks in the park, fishing, and just “hanging out” together. Professional staff provide supervision and support, and work with the volunteer, the child and the family to help set goals for the match.
Big Brothers Big Sister of Greater Lansing strives to provide alternative mentoring opportunities with flexibility, thus allowing more volunteers to become involved based on their schedules. Our organization also provides opportunities for matches to participate in scheduled activities, including Lugnut game outings, hayrides, community projects, holiday get-togethers and many others. This gives everyone involved with the program the chance to meet other bigs and littles and share in fun activities, and maybe share some of their own accomplishments, goals, etc., with each other.
